tories of the Land and Its People includes the work of over 140 students who participated in a year-long collaboration between the Farnsworth Art Museum and four public schools: Appleton, Hope, Lincolnville and Islesboro. Begun in early October 2011, Stories of the Land and Its People: An Arts-Integrated School Initiative for Midcoast Maine was organized so that students would learn from their teachers, museum professionals and mentor/artists about how to use the arts— especially digital photography and video—in their studies of english language arts, history and social sciences and other disciplines. Through the project, the Farnsworth, as the lead partner, is bringing more art-making and arts learning experiences into the 4th- and 7th-grade classrooms, as well as providing multiple guided tours in the museum throughout the academic year. Throughout the project, middle- and high-school students in Julia’s Gallery have been filming a documentary video about how the teachers are employing the arts to support core curricular requirements mandated by the state; the documentary will be premiered at The Strand at 1:00 p.m., Sunday, August 12.
